Replacing Total Knee Replacement Surgery by Simple Orthotic Device

The name Orthokaer is a play on words suggesting ‘Orthotic Care’ signifying the organisation’s mission of providing relief and rehabilitation treatment to patients through the use of orthotic i.e., externally applied non-invasive devices. Orthokaer, created by Dr. Vijaykumar Naik, came into formation as a family venture for treating patients who face knee joint problems through building upon the 40+ years of professional experience he has had in providing relief and rehabilitation treatment to his patients, at an NGO called PNR Society of Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India.

Prior to the formation of Orthokaer, Dr. Vijaykumar Naik continued his work as a consulting prosthetist and orthotist, and PNR Society. His central work at PNR Society was to treat patients suffering from knee joint problems (osteoarthritis) through his own patented knee brace which he called the ‘Poly-Centric Knee Brace’. The Poly-Centric Knee Brace was a knee brace which was custom designed for each and every patient, thus requiring the necessity for in-person camps for reaching to unreached patients all over India with a team of qualified technicians. Upon reflecting on this activity, his elder son through his own work experience and qualification formed the concept of what was now to become Orthokaer. He came up with the vision of providing a standardised version of the knee brace eliminating the need for in person visits, and with the practical and technical experience of Dr. Vijaykumar Naik, the two of them created a standardised, robust and patented version of the knee brace which is now called Orthokaer’s Multi-Axis Knee Brace. The Multi-Axis Knee Brace builds upon the Poly-centric knee brace providing the same relief and treatment to the patients with greater comfort in a more. This brace serves as the foundation of what’s to come through the activities of Orthokaer.

About Dr. Vijaykumar Naik

Prosthetist & Orthotist

Dr. Vijaykumar Naik is a prosthetist & orthotist, registered as a practitioner in the Rehabilitation Council of India, who has made significant contributions to the field of rehabilitation for the physically challenged. Dr. Naik holds multiple degrees, specifically, Bachelor in Prosthetic & Orthotic, MBA, and is currently a PhD Scholar.

At the start of his career, Dr. Naik worked under the guidance of Dr. P.K. Sethi for the famously known ‘Jaipur Foot’ at RRC, SMS Medical College, Jaipur. Soon after, Dr. Naik worked as a Chief Prosthetist & Orthotist in the Ministry of Health, Sana’a, Republic of Yemen for almost 10 years before working at the internationally famed Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, USA where he has also received fellowship. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his work in developing low-cost aids and appliances for the physically challenged, including the Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Young Scientist Award and the National Award for Best Technological Innovation in 2001.

Dr. Naik’s most significant contributions to the field are of the development of a patented prosthetic limb known as ‘Prabha Foot’ and a patented orthotic device known as the ‘Poly-Centric Knee Brace’ for osteoarthritis.

Dr. Naik has fitted this brace on lakhs of patients all over India and abroad through camp activities and at the PNR Society’s base clinic in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. He has also set up prosthetic and orthotic manufacturing & training departments in India as well as neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal through a collaboration with IMPACT Foundation, UK. Dr. Naik continues to actively engage in rehabilitating the physically challenged by providing suitable assistive devices, with numerous patients benefiting daily.

Dr. Vijaykumar Naik currently works as a consulting Prosthetist & Orthotist at P.N.R. Society of Bhavnagar, and as the Director and Prosthetist & Orthotist at Orthokaer.
